WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Clinton travels to Michigan on Tuesday to raise some $500,000 for Democratic Senate candidate Debbie Stabenow, as well as other Senate hopefuls. Stabenow, who is finishing her second term in the U.S. House representing Michigan's 8th Congressional District, is locked in a tight race with incumbent Republican Sen. Spencer Abraham in what has become one of the most high-profile Senate contests this election year. Stabenow trails Sen. Spencer Abraham in campaign fund-raising by more than $3 million, according to July disclosure reports A former state legislator, Stabenow recently gained attention for sponsoring bus trips to Canada for senior citizens intent on purchasing inexpensive prescription drugs in an effort to underscore her support for the Clinton administration's Medicare prescription drug proposal.

An Airbus A320 jet crashed today into the Persian Gulf off the coast of Bahrain, the Bahraini Foreign Ministry says. The Airbus A320, Gulf Air Flight 072, was on a scheduled flight from Cairo to Manama when it went down, according to ministry officials. Bahrain television reported 143 people were on board. Earlier reports had said the plane was flying from Bahrain to Cairo. The U.S. Fifth Fleet is helping in the rescue operation, and says the plane crashed in 18 feet of water.
